29.10.2007 Estonia Supports Azerbaijan’s Reform Endeavours

29. oktoober 2007 Estonian Foreign Minister Urmas Paet began his official visit to Azerbaijan on Monday, 29 October.

In his speech at the Estonia-Azerbaijan Business Forum in Baku, the Foreign Minister called for the reinvigoration of relations between the two countries. Paet confirmed that Estonia considers business relations with Azerbaijan to be important, and expressed hope that entrepreneurs from both countries would develop good contacts during the course of the visit. The foreign minister is accompanied on his visit by an Estonian business delegation.

“Azerbaijan’s strong economic development has sparked interest in Estonia,” said Paet. He added that, in addition to business prospects, Estonia is also interested in the nation’s development in general. “We truly sympathize with your reforms and aspirations,” said the Foreign Minister.

In his speech, Paet emphasiSed three factors that help facilitate the influx of a nation’s foreign investments. The first factor, or goal, is to generate interest. The second factor is that a solid legal framework would be in place, which builds up positive perception of the country and is conducive to the launching of businesses. The third factor Paet stressed was confidence. “Confidence either exists or it does not. Confidence is built up over time, and it is supported by unambiguous policies,” said Paet. “I am certain that the people gathered at this Estonia-Azerbaijan Business Forum are able to push further the limits of our bilateral political and economic relations,” Paet said with conviction.

Foreign Minister Paet will be in Azerbaijan until 30 October. He has meetings scheduled with Azerbaijani President Ilham Alijev, Deputy Speaker of the Parliament Bahar Muradova, Foreign Minister Elmar Mammadyarov, Minister of Economic Affairs Heydar Babayev, and Minister of Industry and Energy Natig Aliyev.
